At our recent Community Leaders' /Fiscal Stability Committee meeting there were questions raised regarding fall sports. The first question that was asked related to the decision to move Volleyball to the fall season to allow for post-sectional play. Below please find a response from Dennis Roy, our Volleyball coach, when he responded to the community member that posed the question.
"Dr. Bowers' mentioned to me today that you had some questions concerning our JV & Var VB program moving to the Fall in 2014-15. Without knowing your specific questions, I will do my best to fill you in.
My guess is that many parents did not even know that High School volleyball is played in the Fall in every Section of New York state except parts of Section 3. Since 2006 schools in Sections 2, 3, 4 and 7 have been transitioning from playing Winter Volleyball to Fall Volleyball.
Sections 2, 4 and 7 completed their transition to Fall in 2009, thus eliminating the opportunity for any Section 3 Winter VB teams to compete in Regional play.
Specific to Section 3: 28 teams have moved to the Fall since 2007. We now feel the time is right for Hamilton to follow suit and stay inline with the rest of NYS and the NYSPHSAA (NYS Public High School Athletic Association) and the recent trends in Section 3, by moving our JV & Var. VB program to the Fall beginning in 2014-15.
We have done our homework by surveying our female students to see if there is enough interest to have Fall VB, there is. We also considered how this move would affect our current Fall offerings. With other Fall teams in combinations, and others indicating the status of their programs would not be affected by the move, now is the right time. We have also addressed potential increases in transportation costs and there will be none.
Moving our Volleyball team to the Fall will provide Hamilton VB players the same opportunities as the rest of our Varsity sports, post-sectional play, something they are not afforded right now. A move to the Fall will also elevate the gym congestion we experience in the Winter.
I hope this helps, if not please feel free to contact me if you need additional information."
The statement below is from our Athletic Director, Jen Dean, when she was asked if we could run both a Girl's Soccer and Girl's Volleyball team at HCS, now that Field Hockey is no longer played at Hamilton. If we have enough students sign up for both teams in the fall, we will run both teams. This is not a funding issue, it's a participation issue. We simply may not have enough student interest to keep the teams viable. I hope this answers any questions that you may have.
"We will have to see what happens with sign-ups (in early May), it could go either way. Despite volleyball moving to fall, girls soccer would benefit greatly from a combination with another school. It is my prediction that the program could only sustain itself on its own for one more year, and that would not be ideal....."
